If you type/paste a URL, it automatically becomes a link.
If, however, you want to make another piece of text into a link, you need to highlight the text you want to be a link, click the URL button (globe with a grey page icon), and then type an equals sign inside the square brackets and then type/paste the URL after the equals sign.
Example: [ url=http://www.myurl.com]some text[/url ]
NB - there are no spaces in the actual code, I just had to put those in so it would display!
