It was nearly seven-thirty when I discovered it. I was working late, finishing a web interface with the finance database, and was checking the outcome, when I saw a large investment going to Vries & de Vries, the sponsors of GM foods in Europe. This was surprising, as my employers were an ethical investments trust. I went back into the code to check that the page was working properly, and hit the refresh button. It was still there. A quarter of a million pounds. I stared at the page, the pixels dancing in front of my tired eyes. I went and got a cup of coffee from the kitchen. I returned to my desk and gazed at the page again. There was no mistaking, it was definitely an investment in Vries & de Vries. I copied the data from the web page into an email and sent it to Mogens de Groot, the trust’s director. Mogens

TaraI shut down my computer and left the office. I used the stairs - I got trapped in a lift for two hours once, on a Friday afternoon. Brian, the security man, shook his head as he saw me emerging from the stairwell. “You computer geeks, there’s no hope for you,” he said, smiling. “I know, I’m completely tragic,” I said. “I’ll just go home to my microwave meal for one and surf the net all night.”
