Having seen the film, I really wanted to read the book. The film was fairly faithful to the book, except towards the end.
There were some extra bits in the book, which were most enjoyable. It is well-written, though the style is a bit stilted perhaps. The revelation about where Howl originally came from was very cool and most amusing.
The plot was very complex, but the author managed to sustain it very well. The characters were also well-drawn, and there were plenty of female villains (witches of course, sigh). Also it doesn't become apparent till the end whether some of the characters are good or not; very cleverly done.
